Women's Work in the Long 19th Century
Syllabi and Course Materials
This section of our website includes materials from recent offerings of our team-taught course on Women's Work in the Long Nineteenth Century. In 1999, we aimed to have our students try out a variety of research techniques and presentation technologies while studying the work of American women from different ethnic groups. In 2001, we focused specifically on cultural representations of several different categories of work--e.g., migration/settlement and service/industry--as seen in images such as advertising cards and book illustrations. Drawing on readings from literature and history, we aimed to combine "deep" and detailed analysis of images from the nineteenth century in their own historical context with presentation and interpretation of such images on this website.
